The List

(new to me in 2024)

More Classics Please

Some of my favorite movie moments in 2024 came from watching older movies that I’d never seen before. Chief among them were Spotlight and Moonstruck, each of which had been recommended to me multiple times. Of course, the backlog list is so long and there are so many themes within it - completing the Nick Cage filmography for example - but here is an initial list of movies that are at the top of the list for 2025:

What I’m Most Excited For in 2025…

Oooof, is it just me, or is it looking rough out there for movies in 2025? I am sure there will be some great films that are currently flying under the radar, but as for the mainstream blockbuster movies, it seems to be largely superhero fodder and uninspiring reboots…

Number one on my list of movies I’m excited about for next year is the latest installment of the Mission Impossible series. This will be the 8th movie in a series that has been going for almost 30 years, and wow how the formula has changed over the years. I honestly think it is so impressive how Tom Cruise and company have kept this franchise relevant and exhilerating, always pushing the envelope on action sequences and story beats while maintaining a level of quality that always delivers thrills, wittyness, and just plain action-adventure fun.

I have no idea if they plan on making any more movies after this one given how the cast is aging. If this is the last one, I hope it goes out on a high note.

I don’t know much about The Brutalist, other than that is a post-war story involving architecture and the talents of one Adrien Brody. From what I have seen from the trailers, I’m super intrigued by the score and cinematography, though I’m unfamiliar with a lot of people who have worked on this film.

I always appreciate how the start of the year brings with it Oscars season and catching up on some of the best movies of the year before. My impression is that The Brutalist will very much be in the conversation!
